Glass: 30 years of innovation

In 2022, Cerfav - the European Research and Training Center for Glass Arts - celebrates its 30th anniversary and participates in the international year of glass.

Cerfav, is located in France near Nancy, in Vannes-le-Châtel, a glass-making village for more than 250 years. Today, Cerfav is the French reference center for glass materials and processes.


Its exceptional multi-technical platform allows to treat all the glass processes :
- glass blowing
- casting
- fusing
- flameworking : artworking, beadmaking, and scientific instruments
- coldworking : engraving, glass sanding, ...
- stained glass
- painting on glass
- screen-printing on glass

Its FabLab proposes to apply digital processes to glass :

- 3D modeling
- manufacture of molds adapted to the glass blowing process
- making 3D prototypes
- project simulation



Cerfav brings together on the same platform, technical, artistic and scientific skills around three main activities: training, culture and research & development.


Cerfav : the only training center dedicated to glass in France

Each year, about 250 people are trained in Vannes-le-Châtel by a specialized teaching team. Most of the professionals in the glass sector have been trained at Cerfav.

Its thirty years of experience allow a quality training adapted to the project of each one. The small groups of learners allow for a better accompanying.

"Createur Verrier" training : to materialise an artistic approach with glass


This training is intended for people from art or design schools who want to realize their projects in glass and create their own craft activity.

4 options are available :

- glass blowing
- warm glass forming
- stained glass and painting
- flameworking (new in september 2022)

The goals of the two-year course :

- design one's own objects,
- justify his projects artistically and economically,
- acquire mastery of one or more glass techniques.

Duration : 2 years full time, 1456 hours between September and June each year

Summer classes

Each summer in july, the Cerfav offers a unique program of about twenty courses on all glass craft techniques.

Glass artists are invited to share their know-how with Cerfav's instructors.

Cerfav : a scientific research center

The Cerfav is the only French research center with such expertise in glass materials. Cerfav mobilizes its teams and workshops to meet the needs of professionals through collaborations or research services.

Human and technical resources :

- A team of doctors, engineers and technicians specialized in glass materials,
- A chemistry laboratory for research, formulation and characterization,
- Technical workshops for melting and shaping glass for semi-industrial transfer in complete confidentiality.

- Project leaders who wish to understand and use the properties of the of the glass material.

Cerfav : a tourist and cultural center

The Cerfav's Cultural Center has among its missions the promotion of glass art, the mediation of the glass culture, the development of tourism, the link with the territory and its residents.


Exhibition "Glass: 30 years of innovation at Cerfav Vannes-le-Châtel", Nancy Museum of Fine Arts
From the 26th of March to the 18th of September 2022

Cerfav is invited to celebrate its 30th anniversary at the Nancy Museum of Fine Arts.

On this occasion, a selection of the finest creations from glass designers trained at Cerfav is being exhibited in different spaces of the Museum. Visitors can discover a selection of artistic and design projects. This constitutes a retrospective of 30 years of Cerfav's existence and underlines the undeniable place occupied by its students who have become the actors of contemporary glass creation.

Glass Artist Residencies

Since 2018, the Cerfav hosts each year year, with the support of the DRAC, an artist in residence to :

- Disseminate culture and promote the arts and and techniques of glass in rural areas,

- Encourage the place of art in the crafts,

- Stimulate contemporary creation with glass.
